Breaking down beauty labels: what they mean and why they matter

When it comes to today's beauty market, there are lots of labels, terms and buzzwords to pay attention to. Here, we break down the labels for you - what they mean and why they matter:

Cruelty-free beauty products are products that are not tested on animals. Big companies may label their products with a Leaping Bunny, which is a symbol certifying that a product really is cruelty-free. Small businesses may not always have such labels, so feel free to contact them to get more information on the products.

Whereas cruelty-free relates strictly to animal-testing, vegan beauty products follow the same rules of a vegan food product: they contain no animal-based or animal-derived products. A vegan product will not contain common natural ingredients, such as beeswax, honey or goat's milk, all of which come from animals. Many vegan products are also cruelty-free.

Additive-free and synthetic-free

Additives and synthetics are commonly added to mass market beauty products. Some can be carcinogenic (for example, synthetic colors) and others are potential allergens and irritants to those with sensitive skin. A product without synthetics or additives contains only naturally-occurring materials.

A product which has a USDA certified organic seal has gone through a process of certification by the government, which requires that the product contains a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. The rest may not necessarily be certified organic, but they cannot be treated with fertilizers, pesticides or toxic chemicals. Even without a green USDA seal, a product can still be organic. This generally means that that the product contains at least 70% organic ingredients.

It's common to confuse all-natural with organic; however, they're not interchangeable. A product that is labeled as natural typically has few, if any, synthetic ingredients. The best way to determine if a product is natural? Just check the ingredients list. If you see an ingredient that you don't recognize, research it.
